Purchased a 2/2.5 oz leather swatch for practice and confirmed it as the minimum workable thickness for future cover testing. Assessed local tool availability and noted gaps in thread, needle, and awl sizing, establishing the need to source appropriate materials from primary suppliers before proceeding with prototype development.

Our practice leather has been acquired! Not the color I want for the finished product but perfectly priced for practice.
Quick note about the leather:
This is a 2/2.5 oz swatch. After being hands on with a lot of leather today, I concluded any thinner than this wouldn't handle well as a book cover. We'll see how this goes in practice! Price 23.99. Agreeable.
Quick note about the other supplies:
At first and second glance, the shop seemed to have everything I needed, until I started looking for exactly what I needed.
18/3 linen thread in black (only in polyester)
Blunt tip #4–5 needles (none with low-profile eyes)
1 mm diamond/round awls (sizing started at 2 mm)
The next step will be sourcing from my current suppliers online, which I intend to do today and tomorrow.
