Updated: Nov 16
Rocky Mountain order delay shifts the 9×6 prototype schedule and pauses material testing. Priority evaluations include updated hole-punch sizing, archival-grade waxed linen thread, and graphite-tone goat leather to confirm structural requirements. Weekend focus shifts to website construction while awaiting Monday’s delivery to continue work.
Date: Friday November 7, 2025
Classification: Week 5 Day 7 | Admin Day
Last week's order from Rocky Mountain Leather Supply has been delayed until this upcoming Monday. See 11/1/2025 Material Procurement.
Why this is an important note
Today's goal was to make our first big step in development of the 9X6 Prototype. See 10/1/2025 Neenah Sample Stock & 5 Signature Notebook post for details.
In total, I estimate eight-ish days practicing the analog skill of bookbinding, the rest has been sourcing supplies that meet my standards- a difficult task so I'm reminded.
Most important to this next iteration of the 9x6 Prototype is testing:
Rocky Mountain Premium Titanium Hole Punch Set (#1–5)
Range from 1 mm to 2.5 mm; titanium-coated for edge longevity and precise cylindrical holes in leather and paper templates.
Fil au Chinois “Lin Câblé” Waxed Linen Thread (size 432 | 0.63 mm | black)
100 % flax linen from France; archival-grade replacement for the Talas Irish Linen currently out of stock.
Why? I'm not convinced that 1mm holes and 18/3 thread will provide the wear-with-all I require for this heavier Notebook/Journal. Certainly for the 5x4 but not the 9x6. See 10/29/2025 Piece #7 for details about the 5x4 Notebook/Journal.
The next matter of importance was testing archival grade goat leather in graphite. While not the raw finish I was hoping for, it's quality is corroborable and fits the purpose of Research and Development acceptably.
Alran “Sully” Chevre Chagrin (France)
Charcoal | X-Large (~5 sq ft)Vegetable-tanned goatskin, ~1.1 mm (≈ 2.75 oz), medium-firm temper. Chosen for its balance of rigidity and flexibility without backing or adhesives. Graphite-tone should sit nicely against the black paper stock.
All things said
We're simply going to wait. I don't like it but experience has firmly established that pivoting is the best course of action. What's the focus while we wait over this weekend? Building the hub where all of this information can come together. Earlier this week I had an elucidating meeting with a colleague, in which we discussed my path, expectations, and how best I might achieve goals. I'll be dedicating this weekend solely to building the website.
